* Two to four years – this is generally the amount of time you can expect it to take to be able to read music scores you love fluently enough to play most of the heart-achingly beautiful and swoon music that make life so much richer. It depends on how much time and attention you give your learning and how easily you integrate. Walking, swimming and yoga are very helpful for this. Imagine playing Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ slow movement or ‘Fur Elise’, or the popular songs from your teenage years, or to improvise your feelings at the piano, or even movie soundtracks. The oboe theme to ‘The Mission’? The main theme to ‘Out of Africa’ with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford? Perhaps an Adele or Ed Sheeran or Leonard Cohen song? The choices are pretty much endless. Here’s what my piano students have said…
“This is what I’ve been hoping for” LB
“Pamela is very patient, calm and accepting. I feel motivated to practise and really look forward to learning more and improving. You bet I’ll be continuing on! Oh, and thank you for a magical concert experience” S R
“It’s my fortune to learn with you. Thank you very much for your warm encouragement and creative teaching, which lets me enjoy playing every day” JF
“I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying playing my new piano. I play whenever I have a spare minute, and now I’m working my schedule to make more of those minutes! I can’t get enough. It’s wonderful – thank you for encouraging this passion. I love it” KL
“How can you put into words the meaning of what you are doing? What it means to me, that I’m being taught by Pamela to listen to my inner voice, to feel the music, to trust my instincts.” MR
“I am a 26yr old full-time working woman. I had learnt piano through childhood and high school and gone through the rigors of music exams. Probably like many other adults when school and university ended I found that I had no way of furthering my interest in music particularly after moving to Sydney. I desperately needed some inspiration to help me have control over my hobby and learning for fun rather than the chore it was to play when I was younger. Then I met Pamela. She understood right away where I was at, that I needed a mentor to build up my confidence again and to give me ideas of what is out there in the music world so that I can choose what to play rather than be told to. She also told me how I could do something social with my music. After a year or 2 with Pamela I feel very confident with my skills in using music for pleasure and to enrich my soul. At this stage in my life and learning needs I really benefited from Pamela’s holistic style of teaching i.e. looking at everything going on in your life and your internal motivations and adapting her teaching style to suit these needs. In the end music should always be about providing pleasure enjoyment & inspiration to your life and now I can appreciate my piano playing as an activity which provides this for me.” Emily
“It’s one thing to have the knowledge, but they’ve got to be able to impart it! Thank you, for teaching me. It’s always a joy to me that I consistently LEARN at every lesson.” JJS
“I’m so happy with the progress I am making, and that I write and perform my own songs with such a confident piano accompaniment”. JJS
“I felt, after spending quite a bit of time playing alone, much more inspired to play well. I find myself more focused and confident as a musician. I don’t feel as isolated from other musicians and ‘the music world’ and I am more determined to improve my playing.” MC
“Work/life balance is being achieved for the first time in years! Playing the piano again after such a long gap has been amazing. I feel empowered.” Marcia R
“You have a beautiful gentle manner and I appreciate your insights” RD
“Knock on effects for lifestyle is significant. Music is a great hobby to focus on. It’s a great way to unwind after a hectic day in the corporate jungle, and it keeps you away from other ‘hobbies’ that are less beneficial.” D McK
“I learnt more with you in half an hour than I did in an eight week course elsewhere” Tony
“Learning music with Pamela has been a most satisfying experience. Pamela’s technical ability, combined with her knowledge and understanding in other areas of teaching has inspired a passion for learning, playing and experiencing music in a way that I have not experienced before. Her patience, and understanding of the human experience has made possible a creative learning environment, where the material presented has provided the opportunity to explore the relationship between music and other areas of the arts, in a way that has enriched the musical experience. I would happily recommend Pamela to anyone wanting to widen his or her musical horizons.” PP
